Plumbing is the skilled trade of working with pipes, tubing and plumbing fixtures. These fixtures are used for potable water systems and draining waste. Plumbers install or repair piping systems, plumbing fixtures and equipment such as water heaters. Plumbing is usually distinguished from water and sewage systems. Plumbing systems usually serve one building, while water and sewage systems serve a group of buildings. Plumbing used to be very basic up to the 19th century. Eventually separate, underground water and sewage systems eliminated open sewage ditches and cesspools.

Most plumbing work in cities is regulated by government bodies due to the direct impact on the public's health and safety. Plumbing installation and repair work on residences and other buildings generally must be done according to code. This ensures future buyers will have a safe place to live. If permits are required for work, plumbing contractors typically obtain them on behalf of home or building owners.
