Painting & Staining
Any color scheme begins with a single color. Because it can be difficult to make a decision in the abstract, paint manufacturers offer brochures that group colors in schemes they think you'll find attractive. Deciding whether to use a brush or roller is the next step. Use a brush when you need to paint narrow strips or to cut in. A roller lays down paint at least three times faster than the largest brush, and a good roller with beveled ends leaves no roller or overlap marks. Most jobs will require both a roller and a brush. The key is to understand when to use each applicator and to know how to use each properly. A good brush feels like a natural extension of your hand. Bristle brushes are generally more expensive but will last longer.
Make sure to protect the area where you are painting, because the paint will always end up where you don't want it. Invest in a good drop cloth. Use painter's tape to protect trim and other margins. You may also need a dust mask, gloves, and safety goggles if necessary.
