Doors
An aesthetically appealing door can be accomplished three ways: repair (paint or stain,) attach new hardware, or replace them. Paint or stain is inexpensive and quick. New hardware offers an old door a new lease on life. Doors that are damaged, warped, or just out of style should be replaced. To obtain a professional-looking job, follow advice from professional painters and finishers. Prep work is the most important part of painting or staining. Prep may take 80-90% of the total time. Always prime whatever surface you’re about the paint. Primer seals any stains in the surface below it and improves adhesion of the finish coat. The door will never look any better than what’s underneath. Scratches, gouges, and discolorations will show right through any product. Apply paint or stain generously. Remember to keep your work area clean and free of dust.
When replacing an old door, you can choose from prehung doors or “slab” doors. Prehung doors come attached to hinges and a door jam. Slab doors are the exact opposite. Slab door can be a pain to install. Most carpenters prefer prehung door.
