Countertops
Two types of countertops are available for the do-it-yourselfer: tile, and a prefabricated laminate like Formica. Other choices include granite, solid surface, metal, concrete, soapstone, and slate – typically not do-it-yourselfers. Granite can be very difficult to install. Laminate generally is the least expensive, has low maintenance, and it durable. Ceramic is as tough as they come, easy to clean, and is moisture and heat-resistant. Solid surface is also durable and available in many colors. These tops can be special-ordered with a built-in sink. Stone can be a beautiful choice. Stone cleans easily and stands up to water well. Granite is the best all around choice but needs to be sealed to protect it from oil stains. Wood counters are appealing but very hard to protect from scratches.
If you’re considering installing a prefab U-shaped counter, you’re considering one of the hardest installations. Not only must both outside corners be perfectly square, any irregularity along the wall will affect how the counter sits against the other walls. Hire a professional.
